Move to make airlines disclose extra fees

WASHINGTON — Searching and getting the cheapest flight may soon get a lot easier.

The Biden Administration is considering requiring airlines to level with customers and disclose all extra fees during the search process.

That means you’d know about extra baggage fees, seat selection fees, charges for in-flight meals or snacks, and fees to sit together before you select a flight.

It’s Time to Weigh in on size of Airline Seats

Right now, budget airlines fares are listed among traditional airlines. The problem is that budget airlines often only include the base price. Travelers are then charged for additional costs that are often already included with traditional fares.

Some argue the way fares are offered set travelers up to unknowingly pay higher prices.

If the new rule takes affect, all businesses from airlines to Google Flights, and even small travel agencies would be required to comply. It would also apply to any flight that takes off or lands at a U.S. airport, even if it involves an international airline.

“Airline passengers deserve to know the full, true cost of their flights before they buy a ticket,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said. “This new proposed rule would require to be transparent with customers about the fees they charge, which will help travelers make informed decisions and save money.”

US Proposes New Airfare Travel Protections

The Department of Transportation already rolled out a new airline customer service dashboard aimed at helping travelers determine what an airline owes them if a flight is cancelled or delayed because of an airline issue.

Travelers are also being asked to leave comments on a proposed rule to ensure customers get refunds if flights are cancelled or delayed,

While the steps are in the right direction, supporters warn it could be years before they are adopted.
