DIY KC Ice Cream Tour

Kansas City is known for it’s barbecue … but checking out the city’s ice cream scene is the perfect way to spend a hot summer day. July is National Ice Cream Month … and just in time for summer, Travel + Leisure released its list of “The Best Ice Cream Shop in Every State.” I can tell you from experience they are on the right track!
Even better? The best shops in Kansas and Missouri are both in the Kansas City metro … so dive in!
In Kansas, Travel + Leisure named Sylas & Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream in Olathe as the state’s top stop.
Sylas & Maddy’s11925 S Strang Line Rd, Olathe
Open the door and you’ll be bombarded with the wonderful scent of waffle cones. You’ll also be able to create your own favorite cone from more than three dozen varieties of homemade ice cream. Sylas & Maddy’s offers a rotating menu of dozens of flavors, so it’ll take more than one stop to find your favorite scoop.
A little place called Betty Rae’s Ice Cream ranks the best in Missouri.

The place is so popular, it’s not unusual to see the line out the door and down the sidewalk at the shop’s original location in Waldo. Owners David and Mary Friesen recently opened a second Kansas City location in the River Market.
If you’re really looking to experience a taste of Kansas City, order a scoop of the Barbecue ice cream — complete with burnt ends and BBQ Sauce. The popular flavor is only available for a short time each summer.
Betty Rae’s also has an ice cream truck available for rent for your next special occasion.
While Betty Rae’s is my personal favorite, there are a number of other options for you to try … so, dive into my DIY Ice Cream tour though Kansas City!
Menu at Foo’s

Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard — 6235 Brookside Plaza, Kansas City, MO
This gem is centrally located in Brookside.
You’ll be greeted with the shop’s lavender-painted walls and it’s chalkboard menu full of graffiti.
Good luck choosing your favorite!

Glace is located just south of the Plaza

Glace Artisan Ice Cream4960 Main St, Kansas City, MO
Glace is about as fancy as it sounds.
It’s a summer favorite by chocolatier Christopher Elbow — but you won’t find just chocolate creations at this ice cream shop just south of the Country Club Plaza.
There are nearly two dozen options — everything from dark chocolate to blackberry malt, coffee vanilla stout and goat cheese and cherry.

Westport Ice Cream Bakery

You can find Westport Ice Cream Bakery in the heart of it all at 4120 Pennsylvania.
The shop serves up handcrafted ice cream, sundaes and other sweet treats.
The shop is constantly changing up the ice cream flavors it serves.
If you’re lucky, you may stumble upon cookie monster, jackfruit, and even cherry coke or root beer.
Check out the plastic spoons they serve up, too. They change from white to purple depending on the temperature!

Ice Cream Topped with Lime Shaved Ice

Miami Ice — 1624 W 39th St, Kansas City, MO
Can’t decide between soft serve or shaved ice?
You don’t need to at Miami Ice!
Order your favorite flavor to add to ice … or start with an ice cream base and top it with ice and syrup!
It’s the best of both worlds.
