Honolulu, like many other American cities, is getting into the craft beer scene.
During our recent trip to Hawaii, we decided to check out what the islands had to offer. We left impressed with what we drank.
We put together a quick and easy DIY craft brewery tour based on what we found. The breweries aren’t in any particular order … but Beerworks, Aloha, and Waikiki Breweries are within walking distance of each other. Enjoy!
328 Cooke St, Honolulu
You’ll find a laid-back spot to sit and chat over Beerworks’ craft beers and beer cocktails. The pub opened in 2014 and quickly built a following. The open air building features art from locals on the walls and long benches and tables with enough
room for all of your friends.
The pub opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed on Sunday.
700 Queen St, Honolulu
Just a short walk from Beerworks, Aloha Beer Company offers its twist on craft beer. You’ll find options such as Froot Lupes, Hop Lei IPA, Gimme Black Pils, and Waimanalo Farmhouse Ale.
The brewery also serves up a full menu of small plates, burgers and sandwiches.
1945 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu
Waikiki Brewing Company won a little place in my heart when we visited. It reminded me of pubs at home in Kansas City, (and serves up some mean BBQ!)
The brewery serves up fantastic cold brews as well as tasty craft beer cocktails, plus brunch on Sunday.
This was my favorite stop of the short tour!
Home of the Brave Brewing Company
909 Waimanu St, Honolulu
I can honestly say Home of the Brave was nothing like I expected. In fact, I thought the Lyft driver dropped us at the wrong address at first.
We walked into a museum filled with WWII artifacts and history. After wandering around the first level, make sure you see the person at the register for a password. Then head upstairs to the hidden speakeasy!
You’ll need to give the password and flash the signal to get inside. Walk through the door and you’ll step back in time. The bartenders are dressed in WWII uniforms, and there are WWII movies playing on the wall. Order up, sit down, and enjoy the show! This is a true *must see* for history buffs.
7192 Kalaniana’ole Highway, Honolulu
In full disclosure, we went to Kona Brewing Company during our stop on the big island, so we skipped the Honolulu version.
But, if you haven’t stopped, this brewery is worth the time, in my opinion.
Kona Brewing brews beers such as Longboard Island Lager, Big Wave Golden Ale, and Lavaman Red Ale, among others. Fall in love with one of these and you’ll likely be able to find it at home on the mainland too.
Kona also serves up a full menu of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, and more!
We hope you enjoy the stops as much as we did. Cheers!
