A mile-long stretch of waterfront in Shanghai is so impressive, it’s known simply as “The Bund.”
The word “bund” means embankment, so It’s fitting the “The Bund” in Shanghai is along the Huangpu river.
We were treated to an unforgettable experience with an evening cruise along The Bund.
In my opinion, everyone should first see The Bund at night. It’s all dressed up in its best light at night. I feel the same way about the Eiffel Tower in Paris. There’s just something magical about seeing the landmarks at night. It’s an entirely different feeling during the day.
The Bund is made up of exactly 52 buildings. It’s now the financial center of Shanghai — and the eastern part of the country.
If you enjoy architecture, The Bund by night is going to be unforgettable. You’ll see Baroque, Neoclassical, Gothic, Renaissance, Art Deco and Romanesque touches — all in the one-mile stretch.
Originally built for financial and international companies and business, the buildings now serve different purposes. Hotels, banks, exclusive clubs and other international organizations call the buildings along The Bund home. Tourists are allowed to go inside any of the public buildings.
We paid to add on the cruise during our trip to China through Rewards Travel China. The cruise cost an extra $50 a person. I think the price was worth the hour-plus long cruise. It’s one of the highlights of the trip.
One warning if you plan to take this cruise. It’s also very popular for the people who call Shanghai home. The cruise terminal was packed with hundreds and hundreds of people. It’s incredibly crowded trying to board!
There are several areas on board to sit and enjoy snacks and beverages as you sail. Or you can head upstairs and grab a section of the railing to enjoy the view. Keep in mind the areas with the best views fill up quickly.
A similar tour is available through Viator. It costs a little more, but you also get a guided tour as you walk along The Bund. We only viewed the area from the water.
